Product Description

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a solution used in modern diesel engines to reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). It is a clear, colorless liquid that consists of approximately 32.5% urea (a compound derived from ammonia) and 67.5% deionized water. DEF is also known by its trade name, AdBlue in Europe.

The primary purpose of DEF is to facilitate the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process in diesel engines. Here's how it works:

1. Injection into Exhaust: In vehicles equipped with SCR systems, DEF is stored in a separate tank and injected into the exhaust system downstream of the diesel engine and before the catalytic converter.

2. Chemical Reaction: When DEF is introduced into the hot exhaust gases, it undergoes a chemical reaction, breaking down into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia is the active component that interacts with the NOx emissions in the exhaust.

3. Reduction of NOx: As the ammonia mixes with the exhaust gases, it chemically reacts with the nitrogen oxides (NOx) to convert them into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. This process reduces the NOx emissions, which are a major air pollutant and contribute to smog and other environmental issues.

Using DEF in diesel engines has become a regulatory requirement in many countries to meet stringent emissions standards, such as the Euro 6 standards in Europe and similar regulations in the United States. Failure to use DEF or running out of DEF in a DEF-equipped vehicle can result in reduced engine performance, and some vehicles may even enter a "limp" or reduced power mode until DEF is replenished.

DEF consumption varies depending on the vehicle's engine and operating conditions, but it typically needs to be refilled regularly, much like adding fuel. Drivers or operators of diesel vehicles equipped with SCR systems should monitor DEF levels and top off the DEF tank as needed to ensure compliance with emissions regulations and maintain engine performance.
